Skylar (They/them) is a first-generation Thai-Canadian, non-binary, queer feminist scholar, a neurodivergent (AuDHD) artist, activist, educator, and healer. Currently based in Ottawa, ON, Skylar is the visionary founder of Rooted Souls—a decolonial coaching and consulting practice dedicated to radical care, collective liberation, and transformative justice.
Early Life and Influences
Born in 2538 BE (1995 CE) in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, Skylar's early childhood has been shaped by collectivist society and Indigenous teachings from their ancestral lands, rich with centuries of Buddhist, spiritual, and land-based wisdom. Despite Thailand's historical resistance to European colonization, Skylar's upbringing was deeply influenced by the pervasive legacies of colonialism, global imperialism, and a Eurocentric education system.
Navigating the complexities of the Canadian healthcare and education systems from a young age, Skylar became an advocate out of necessity. Their lived experiences with poverty, chronic illness, gender-based violence, racial discrimination, and systemic oppression have fueled their commitment to creating spaces where marginalized communities can thrive.
Professional Journey and Philosophy
With over a decade of experience in frontline social work, community-based research, and grassroots organizing, Skylar bridges the worlds of queer and feminist theory, disability justice, decolonization, Indigenous perspectives, and narrative-based research methodologies. As a digital storyteller and videographer, they have collaborated with QTBIPOC communities to explore themes of identity, resistance, community, and healing—centering voices and histories often erased in dominant narratives.
Skylar's interdisciplinary approach is rooted in the belief that lived experience is expertise and that collective healing is not only possible but necessary for future generations. They are dedicated to providing the support and care they wish they had growing up—care work that is deeply rooted, relational, and revolutionary.
Skylar believes in the sacredness of care, the power of reclamation,
and the necessity of collective healing for future generations. Rooted
Souls embodies these beliefs, offering a space where transformative change and liberation takes root.
